UK Records Unprecedented Heat as Temperatures Exceed 35°C on Six Days in a Single Year

LONDON: The United Kingdom has set a new heat record after temperatures reached 35°C or higher on six separate days in 2026, marking the highest number of such extreme heat days ever recorded in a single year, according to the Met Office.

The latest milestone was recorded on Friday when the temperature climbed to 35.2°C (95.4°F) in Coton in the Elms, Derbyshire, as the country experienced its third major heatwave of the year. Meteorologists said 2026 has already become the first year in which temperatures of 35°C or above have been recorded across three different calendar months, highlighting the growing frequency of extreme weather.

The Met Office also reported that the UK has already experienced nine separate days with temperatures reaching at least 34°C, surpassing previous annual records. Forecasters attributed the prolonged spell of unusually hot weather to persistent high-pressure systems, with further warm conditions expected over the weekend before a gradual cooling trend begins next week.

Health authorities have maintained heat-health alerts across much of England, urging residents to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during peak hours, and take extra care of vulnerable people, including the elderly, young children, and those with underlying health conditions. Officials also warned of increased risks of dehydration, heat-related illnesses, and pressure on public services as the exceptional summer temperatures continue.
