WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump’s campaign to secure lower interest rates as a catalyst for stronger economic growth is facing mounting challenges, as borrowing costs continue to rise despite repeated calls for monetary easing, complicating the administration’s economic agenda ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
Trump has argued that lower interest rates would provide “rocket fuel” for the U.S. economy by reducing borrowing costs for businesses and consumers, stimulating investment, and making mortgages and loans more affordable. However, market interest rates have remained elevated, with yields on U.S. Treasury securities climbing to some of their highest levels in years.
Higher borrowing costs have weighed on the housing market and business investment, while economic growth slowed to an annualized rate of 1.5% in the most recent quarter. Analysts say persistent inflationary pressures, increased government spending, tariffs, and geopolitical tensions, including the conflict involving Iran, have contributed to keeping interest rates elevated.
The Federal Reserve recently decided to leave its benchmark interest rate unchanged for a fifth consecutive meeting, citing ongoing concerns about inflation, which remains above the central bank’s long-term target. Although Trump has repeatedly urged the Fed to cut rates, policymakers have maintained that price stability remains their primary objective.
Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh acknowledged that inflation continues to pose challenges and emphasized the central bank’s commitment to restoring price stability, while refraining from providing explicit guidance on future policy decisions. Financial markets, meanwhile, continue to anticipate the possibility of another rate increase later this year if inflationary pressures persist.
The persistence of higher borrowing costs has complicated the Trump administration’s efforts to highlight economic gains before voters head to the polls in November. While unemployment remains relatively low and consumer spending has shown resilience, affordability concerns, particularly in housing and household financing, continue to dominate public sentiment, posing a political challenge for Republicans as they prepare for the midterm elections.
