UK Announces Nearly £130 Million Funding for Zero-Emission Vehicle Technology

LONDON: The British government has announced nearly £130 million ($175 million) in funding to support the development of zero-emission vehicle technologies as the United Kingdom accelerates efforts to expand clean transportation and strengthen its automotive industry.

The funding package includes almost £65 million in public money, with the remainder being provided by industry partners, according to Reuters. The initiative is intended to support technological development aimed at advancing the transition toward cleaner and more sustainable vehicles.

The announcement comes as the UK seeks to encourage greater investment in zero-emission vehicle technology and maintain the competitiveness of its automotive sector amid the global shift toward electric and other low-emission transportation solutions.

The latest funding follows a period of strong growth in the UK electric vehicle market. Battery-electric vehicle registrations rose 49% year-on-year in July 2026 to 43,547 units, accounting for 27.4% of new car registrations, according to data cited by Reuters.

The government’s latest investment is expected to support collaboration between the public and private sectors and help develop technologies that can contribute to the UK’s longer-term zero-emission transport objectives.

The move also comes as automakers and governments across Europe intensify efforts to develop electric-vehicle supply chains, improve vehicle technologies and accelerate the transition away from conventional fossil-fuel-powered transport.
