Counter-Terrorism Police Investigate Suspected Anti-Muslim Attacks in Edinburgh, One Charged

EDINBURGH – Scottish counter-terrorism officers are investigating a series of violent attacks in Edinburgh that left five men injured and appeared to target members of the Muslim community, authorities said. A 36-year-old man has been charged in connection with the incidents and is due to appear in court.

According to Police Scotland, the attacks took place across several locations in the city on Friday evening. Five men, aged between 22 and 39, sustained injuries, while three required hospital treatment. Authorities said none of the injuries were life-threatening.

The investigation is being supported by specialist counter-terrorism officers amid indications that the attacks may have been motivated by anti-Muslim hatred. British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer strongly condemned the incidents, describing them as “absolutely appalling” and stating that no one should face violence on the streets because of their faith.

Local Muslim organizations said some of the victims had been attacked after leaving a mosque following prayers. Community leaders have called for the incidents to be treated as Islamophobic hate crimes and urged authorities to ensure the safety of minority communities.

Assistant Chief Constable Catriona Paton said there is “no place for racism or faith-based hate” in Scotland and reassured the public that there is no ongoing threat following the suspect’s arrest. Police have launched a public appeal for information as inquiries continue.

The case has drawn widespread condemnation from political leaders and community organizations across the United Kingdom, with renewed calls for stronger action against religious hatred and extremism.
