KYIV: Russian missile and drone attacks struck several regions across Ukraine overnight, killing at least eight people, including children, and injuring dozens, while neighbouring Poland scrambled fighter jets after the assault approached its airspace.
According to Ukrainian officials, Russia launched a large-scale barrage involving ballistic missiles and drones targeting Kyiv, Lviv, Dnipropetrovsk, and other regions. In the capital, one person was killed and two others were injured after missile strikes caused damage in several districts. Power outages were also reported in parts of Kyiv.
The heaviest casualties were reported in the Dnipropetrovsk region, where six people, including two children, lost their lives. In Kryvyi Rih, a ballistic missile hit a residential house, killing two young girls aged five and 12. In the western city of Lviv, at least 26 people were injured as apartment buildings and civilian infrastructure sustained extensive damage.
The attacks came shortly after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy returned from Washington, where he met U.S. President Donald Trump and discussed strengthening Ukraine’s air defence capabilities, including additional Patriot missile systems. Following the latest strikes, Zelenskyy renewed calls for Ukraine’s allies to accelerate deliveries of advanced air defence systems to protect civilians.
Meanwhile, Poland activated fighter aircraft and heightened its air defence readiness after detecting threats near its eastern border during the Russian assault, underscoring growing regional security concerns.
Ukraine also continued its long-range campaign against Russian military and logistical infrastructure, with drone strikes reportedly igniting fires at warehouse facilities in Russia. Moscow said its air defences intercepted hundreds of Ukrainian drones overnight, while both sides reiterated that they do not deliberately target civilians.
