PARIS: Tourists continued to visit Paris on Thursday despite soaring temperatures as France entered the peak of its fifth heat wave of the summer, according to the Associated Press.

Visitors gathered at some of the French capital’s popular landmarks, seeking shade and relief from the intense heat while continuing with their sightseeing plans. The persistent hot weather has not significantly deterred many tourists from exploring the city during the peak summer travel season.

France has experienced an unusually intense sequence of heat waves this summer, with temperatures approaching or exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in several parts of the country. The latest episode has added to prolonged periods of heat and drought that have affected much of Western Europe.

Earlier in the summer, France recorded temperatures as high as 44.3 degrees Celsius, while heat waves contributed to thousands of excess deaths, according to French public health authorities.

The extreme temperatures have also increased pressure on public services, agriculture and water resources, while dry conditions have contributed to wildfire risks in several regions. Scientists have linked the growing frequency and severity of extreme heat events in Europe to human-induced climate change, warning that heat waves and droughts are increasingly reinforcing one another.
