Trump Urges Russia to Strike Peace Deal with Ukraine Following G7 Talks in France

EVIAN-LES-BAINS: U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday urged Russia to pursue a peace agreement with Ukraine, saying he would “do whatever I can” to help bring an end to the ongoing war, following what he described as a “very good” meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Group of Seven leaders at a summit in France.

Trump made the remarks during the G7 summit held in the lakeside resort of Evian-les-Bains, where he also discussed broader diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving multiple global conflicts. He said his discussions with Zelenskiy and other G7 leaders were constructive and indicated he would hold further bilateral talks with the Ukrainian president.

“I’m gonna do whatever I can,” Trump said, adding that Russia should move toward a negotiated settlement to end the war.

European and Ukrainian officials have been seeking to strengthen diplomatic momentum in their favor, arguing that Ukraine’s position on the battlefield has improved in recent months and calling for increased support to reinforce its negotiating stance with Moscow.

Ukrainian President Zelenskiy, posting on X, said the priority remains strengthening Ukraine’s air defenses and advancing diplomatic efforts to pressure Russia into ending the conflict. He emphasized that “peace is needed” following his talks at the summit.

European diplomats described the discussions as constructive, noting a shared assessment that Russia is currently in a more defensive position. They also expressed hope of persuading Washington to reassess earlier positions perceived as more favorable to Moscow.

The summit also saw broader discussions on global security issues, including concerns over Iran’s nuclear programme and maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, with European leaders pushing for a more coordinated approach in future negotiations.
