United States Cruise Into World Cup Knockout Stage with 2-0 Victory Over Australia

SEATTLE — The United States secured a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage after a commanding 2-0 victory over Australia in their Group D clash on Friday, continuing an impressive start to the tournament on home soil.

Despite the absence of injured captain and star midfielder Christian Pulisic, the Americans delivered another confident performance, taking control of the match from the outset. Australia fell behind in the 11th minute when defender Cameron Burgess inadvertently turned a cross into his own net, handing the hosts an early lead.

The United States doubled their advantage just before halftime through defender Alex Freeman, whose header was initially ruled out for offside before being awarded following a VAR review. The goal sparked jubilant celebrations among players and coaching staff as the hosts moved firmly into command.

Australia attempted to respond after the break, with coach Tony Popovic introducing attacking reinforcements including Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe. While the Socceroos showed greater urgency in the second half, they struggled to create clear scoring opportunities against a disciplined American defense.

The victory gives the United States six points from two matches and guarantees their progression to the Round of 32 with one group-stage game remaining. It also marks only the second time in the nation’s history that the U.S. has won its opening two matches at a World Cup, the first occurrence dating back to the inaugural tournament in 1930.

U.S. head coach Mauricio Pochettino praised his squad’s depth and resilience in overcoming the absence of Pulisic, who missed the match with a calf injury sustained during the team’s opening victory over Paraguay. The coach expressed hope that the influential playmaker would return for the Americans’ final group match against Turkey.

Australia remain on three points and will face Paraguay in a crucial final group-stage fixture as they seek to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds alive.
