MADRID — Spain has cancelled a major World Cup fan zone in central Madrid due to extreme heat conditions, as authorities warn of rising public health risks linked to soaring temperatures during the tournament.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed the suspension of the Plaza de Colón “Plaza Selección” fan zone, where thousands of supporters had been gathering to watch Spain’s World Cup matches on giant screens. The decision affects the planned public screening of Spain’s upcoming Group H match against Saudi Arabia.
Officials cited forecasts of temperatures reaching up to 39°C (102°F), prompting emergency services to issue a high-level heat warning and advise against prolonged outdoor exposure. The cancellation also extends to all scheduled fan zone activities in the area.
The Madrid City Council said the move was taken as a precautionary measure to protect public safety, in coordination with the RFEF and national weather authorities. Fans have been urged to watch matches from air-conditioned indoor venues and to follow official guidance during the heatwave.
