Democratic Socialist Melat Kiros Defeats Veteran Congresswoman Diana DeGette in Colorado Primary

DENVER: Democratic socialist Melat Kiros scored a major upset in Colorado’s Democratic primary, defeating 15-term U.S. Representative Diana DeGette in the race for the state’s 1st Congressional District, marking another significant victory for the Democratic Party’s progressive wing.

Kiros, a 29-year-old attorney backed by Senator Bernie Sanders and progressive organizations including the Democratic Socialists of America and Justice Democrats, campaigned on expanding affordable housing, universal healthcare, workers’ rights, and reducing corporate influence in politics. Her victory reflects growing support among Democratic voters for younger, more progressive candidates challenging long-serving incumbents.

DeGette, who has represented the Denver-based district since 1997, conceded defeat after nearly three decades in Congress. Despite her record as a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, the veteran lawmaker was unable to overcome calls for generational change within the party.

The heavily Democratic district is widely expected to remain in Democratic hands in the November general election, making Kiros the overwhelming favorite to succeed DeGette in Congress. If elected, she would become the first Black woman to represent Colorado in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The primary results underscore an ongoing ideological shift within the Democratic Party, as progressive challengers continue to gain ground against establishment figures in safely Democratic districts. Colorado’s primary also featured other closely watched contests, including the Democratic gubernatorial race and competitive congressional nominations ahead of the November elections.
