Canada Edge Qatar 6–0 in Historic World Cup Victory Marred by Ismaël Koné Injury

VANCOUVER: Canada secured a landmark 6–0 victory over Qatar in a FIFA World Cup Group B match, registering their first-ever win in the tournament’s history, but the achievement was overshadowed by a serious injury to midfielder Ismaël Koné.

Jonathan David starred with a hat-trick, while Cyle Larin, Nathan Saliba and an own goal by Qatar’s Mohamed Manai completed the emphatic scoreline at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver.

The match, however, was halted in the second half after Koné suffered a severe leg injury following a challenge from Qatar’s Assim Madibo. The midfielder was stretchered off the field and taken to hospital, with reports confirming a serious fracture that required immediate medical attention. Madibo was shown a red card after a VAR review of the incident.

Canada, co-hosts of the tournament, controlled much of the game and moved closer to qualification for the knockout stage with the dominant win. Qatar, meanwhile, were reduced to nine men after two dismissals and struggled to contain the hosts throughout the match.

Despite the celebratory result for the Canadian side, the injury to Koné cast a somber tone over what was otherwise a historic night for Canadian football.
