Ed Markey Defeats Seth Moulton in Massachusetts Democratic Senate Primary

BOSTON: U.S. Senator Ed Markey has secured the Democratic nomination in Massachusetts’ Senate primary, defeating U.S. Representative Seth Moulton and overcoming a campaign centered on calls for generational change within the Democratic Party.

Markey, 80, successfully defended his bid for a third full Senate term against Moulton, 47, who argued during the campaign that the party needed younger leadership and an end to the political status quo.

The contest highlighted divisions within the Democratic Party between its progressive and more moderate factions. Markey, who has long been associated with progressive causes, sought to portray Moulton as out of step with Massachusetts voters because of the congressman’s more moderate positions on several issues.

Transgender rights became one of the most prominent issues of the campaign. Markey repeatedly criticized Moulton over previous comments concerning transgender athletes, while Moulton emphasized the need for generational change and questioned whether Markey remained suited to serve another term.

In his victory speech, Markey said Massachusetts needed a senator who would continue to fight for the interests of the state’s residents, reaffirming his commitment to progressive priorities.

Moulton conceded the race and said he would support Markey in the general election, while maintaining that his campaign had initiated an important discussion about the need for a new generation of political leadership.

Markey will now face Republican John Deaton in the November general election. Massachusetts is considered a strongly Democratic state, making the Democratic primary a particularly significant hurdle in the race for the Senate seat.

Markey has been a prominent figure in Massachusetts politics since the 1970s. He entered the U.S. House of Representatives in 1976 and won his Senate seat in 2013. His victory over Moulton represents another successful defense against a younger Democratic challenger seeking to replace a long-serving incumbent.
