Explosive-Laden Drone Discovered at German Airport, Prompting Major Security Investigation

Berlin: German authorities have launched a major investigation after an explosives-laden drone was discovered near a runway at Leipzig/Halle Airport, raising fresh concerns over aviation security and potential hybrid threats targeting critical infrastructure.

The drone, carrying an explosive device, was found overnight in a restricted cargo operations area near the airport’s southern runway. Bomb disposal experts were immediately deployed to secure and examine the device, leading to the temporary suspension of flight operations and the diversion of several aircraft, including cargo and passenger flights. While one runway has since reopened, the southern runway remained closed as investigations continued.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, who visited the airport following the incident, described the discovery as representing “a new quality of danger.” He said the use of an explosive-equipped drone at a major airport marked a significant escalation in the threat posed by unauthorized drone activity and warranted a comprehensive investigation.

Authorities are also investigating a separate incident in which a DHL cargo aircraft reportedly collided with an unidentified object after aborting its landing at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The aircraft later landed safely in Hanover, where minor damage was discovered during inspection. Investigators are examining whether the two incidents are connected.

Leipzig/Halle Airport is one of Europe’s busiest cargo hubs, serving as a major logistics center for DHL, while also supporting military and humanitarian transport operations. The airport has previously been the site of suspected sabotage incidents, including a 2024 parcel fire linked by investigators to broader security concerns.

Federal investigators, including counterterrorism specialists, have taken over the case. Although no group has claimed responsibility and authorities have not identified those behind the incident, officials are treating the matter as a serious security threat amid heightened concerns over hybrid attacks targeting European infrastructure.
