Labour Sets July 17 Timeline for Andy Burnham to Become UK Prime Minister

LONDON: Britain’s governing Labour Party has set out a timetable that could see Andy Burnham formally become party leader and the United Kingdom’s next prime minister by 17 July, following the expected departure of Sir Keir Starmer.

The Labour Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) agreed that if only one candidate secures the required nominations in the leadership contest, that individual will be confirmed as leader at a special conference on July 17. Burnham, who is widely regarded as the frontrunner after his decisive victory in the Makerfield by-election, is currently expected to emerge as the sole candidate.

The timetable follows Burnham’s successful return to Parliament after winning the Makerfield by-election, a result that intensified pressure on Starmer and accelerated discussions over the party’s future leadership. Once confirmed as Labour leader, Burnham would be invited by the King to form a government, completing the transition to prime minister.

Meanwhile, political tensions within the government have continued to rise. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has reportedly asked Prime Minister Starmer to dismiss junior Home Office minister Mike Tapp for allegedly breaching the Ministerial Code by publicly discussing government policy before its official announcement. However, Downing Street said Tapp remains in his post, indicating that no decision has yet been taken on his future.

Separately, Sky News reported that Burnham is expected to outline key policy priorities ahead of his anticipated leadership, including plans to strengthen regional governance while ruling out reforms to the funding arrangements for the UK’s devolved administrations. The reported stance has drawn criticism from political opponents in Scotland and Wales, who argue that changes to the current funding formula remain necessary.

The leadership transition is expected to mark a significant political shift for Labour, with Burnham preparing to outline his vision for government as the party seeks to consolidate its position ahead of the next phase of its administration.
