New Hampshire Primary Sets Stage for Key US Senate Battle

CONCORD — Voters in New Hampshire are heading to the polls for primary elections that will determine the candidates competing for one of the most closely watched open seats in the US Senate, with the outcome potentially influencing control of Congress after the November midterm elections.

The Senate race opened up following Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen’s decision to retire after three terms, turning the traditionally competitive state into an important battleground for both parties.

On the Democratic side, US Representative Chris Pappas remains the leading contender, but progressive candidate Karishma Manzur has gained significant ground in recent weeks. Pappas, a centrist with strong fundraising and support from prominent Democrats, had previously enjoyed a sizeable advantage. Manzur’s grassroots campaign has since narrowed the gap, reflecting broader tensions within the Democratic Party over its political direction and foreign policy.

The Republican primary features former US Senator John Sununu and former Senator Scott Brown. Sununu has received the endorsement of President Donald Trump and is considered the stronger Republican contender, with the eventual nominee expected to face a competitive general election campaign.
