Newsom Accuses Trump Administration of Politically Motivated Justice Department Scrutiny

California: Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom on Monday accused the U.S. Department of Justice of conducting a politically motivated investigation targeting him and his family, alleging that the Trump administration is using federal law enforcement powers against political opponents.

In a video posted on X, Newsom said federal agents have contacted associates, including friends and former staff members, and have sought records as part of an expanding inquiry. While he did not provide detailed evidence regarding the nature of the probe, his office said the investigation has reportedly broadened into “increasingly personal matters involving the Governor’s family and professional network.”

“Donald Trump isn’t just coming after me because of my mean tweets,” Newsom said, referring to President Donald Trump. “He’s coming after me because I’m considering running for president.”

Newsom’s comments come amid rising political tensions in Washington and renewed debate over the independence of federal law enforcement agencies. His office suggested the inquiry reflects an attempt to intimidate political opponents, though full details of any investigation have not been publicly confirmed.

A person familiar with the matter denied that Newsom himself is the target of a formal investigation but acknowledged multiple federal probes involving individuals within his network, including an inquiry related to his wife’s tax matters. According to the source, that investigation began last year and was not initiated by current political leadership in Washington.

The same source also referenced a separate federal case involving former Newsom chief of staff Dana Williamson, who was indicted on charges tied to alleged campaign finance fraud involving former U.S. Health Secretary Xavier Becerra. Williamson later pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bank fraud. Officials said the case, originally opened during the Biden administration, has since expanded to include additional staff members.

Newsom, however, has not been accused of any wrongdoing in connection with the case.

The U.S. Department of Justice declined to comment on the matter. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche also did not respond to questions during a Capitol Hill appearance alongside Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley.

The developments are expected to intensify partisan disputes over the role of federal law enforcement in politically sensitive investigations as the 2026 election cycle approaches.
