Reform UK Calls for Enhanced Security for Lawmakers Following Ann Widdecombe’s Murder

LONDON: Britain’s Reform UK party has called for comprehensive security protection for all lawmakers following the murder of senior party member and former minister Ann Widdecombe, arguing that rising political hostility has created an increasingly dangerous environment for elected representatives.

Speaking at a press conference, Reform UK’s head of home affairs policy, Zia Yusuf, said every Member of Parliament should be offered full-time security if requested. He accused sections of the political establishment and the media of fuelling hostility toward politicians, claiming the party’s leader, Nigel Farage, has received hundreds of death threats since February.

Yusuf said that if Reform UK forms the next government, it would provide around-the-clock protection for lawmakers from all political parties and allocate additional resources to safeguard former public figures facing credible threats.

The calls come after the killing of Ann Widdecombe, 78, a former Conservative cabinet minister who later joined Reform UK. Police have arrested a British man in connection with the incident, while investigators continue to examine the motive behind what authorities have described as a targeted attack.

The latest incident has reignited concerns over the safety of British politicians following the fatal attacks on Labour MP Jo Cox in 2016 and Conservative MP Sir David Amess in 2021. Security arrangements for MPs have been strengthened in recent years, including the installation of panic alarms, enhanced protection at constituency events and expanded police support, but calls for further measures have intensified in light of recent developments.
