Russian Missile Attack Hits Kyiv, Traps Residents in Damaged Apartment Building

KYIV: Russia launched a missile attack on Ukraine’s capital Kyiv early Monday, striking a residential building in the city’s historic Podil district and trapping residents on the upper floors, Ukrainian officials said.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said people were trapped between the seventh and ninth floors of the damaged apartment building, while emergency services rushed to the scene to conduct rescue operations. Drone debris also fell on another residential building in the district and in several other parts of the capital.

Reuters witnesses reported hearing a series of explosions across Kyiv as air defence systems engaged incoming missiles and drones during the overnight assault. Authorities warned residents to remain in shelters while emergency crews assessed the extent of the damage.

The latest attack comes just days after Russia carried out its deadliest assault on Kyiv this year, killing at least 30 people and injuring dozens in a massive barrage of missiles and drones that caused widespread destruction across the Ukrainian capital.

The renewed strikes also come on the eve of the NATO summit in Turkey, where the war in Ukraine is expected to dominate discussions among alliance leaders.
