Sultan of Oman to Undertake State Visit to UK in October

LONDON: Sultan Haitham bin Tarik of Oman will undertake a three-day state visit to the United Kingdom from October 20 to 22, where he will be hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Windsor Castle, according to the Associated Press.

The visit comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and growing international attention on Oman’s strategic position along the southern shore of the Strait of Hormuz.

Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles III and Queen Camilla will host Sultan Haitham at Windsor Castle during the visit. Further details of the programme have not yet been released.

State visits in Britain traditionally feature formal ceremonies, including a ceremonial procession, military engagements and a state banquet hosted by the monarch, alongside meetings with senior government officials.

Although the British monarch formally extends invitations for state visits, such visits are undertaken at the request of the elected government and are generally arranged well in advance.

The planned visit assumes added significance as Oman has been navigating pressure from both the United States and Iran amid tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a vital international shipping route through which a significant share of global oil and natural gas supplies passes.

Sultan Haitham previously met King Charles at Windsor Castle during a private visit to Britain last year. The upcoming trip will be the first state visit to the UK by an Omani sultan since March 1982, when the late Queen Elizabeth II hosted Sultan Qaboos bin Said.

The visit is expected to provide an opportunity for Britain and Oman to reinforce their longstanding bilateral relations and discuss regional and international developments.
