Two Killed in California Library Shooting; Suspect Taken Into Custody

CHICO, California: A shooting at a public library in Northern California left two people dead and one juvenile injured on Monday evening, according to local police, while the suspected gunman was taken into custody shortly after the incident.

Authorities said the shooting occurred at the Butte County Library branch in Chico around 5 p.m., when emergency services received multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire and screaming inside the building. Law enforcement officers responded within minutes and entered the premises to secure the area.

Police confirmed that the suspect attempted to flee through the rear of the library but was quickly apprehended by officers positioned outside the building. Officials stated that the suspect acted alone, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The victims, both adults, were pronounced dead at the scene. A child who was also injured during the incident was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims or the suspect, citing ongoing efforts to notify next of kin. The motive behind the attack remains under investigation.

The shooting prompted a large emergency response, temporary road closures in the area, and the establishment of a family reunification center for those inside the library at the time of the incident.
