UK Says Armed Forces Ready to Defend Nation Following Iran Warning Over U.S. Bomber Operations

LONDON: The United Kingdom has affirmed that its armed forces are fully prepared to defend the country after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warned that British military facilities could become targets for supporting U.S. military operations against Iran.

The warning followed reports that the British government had allowed the United States to use UK military bases for bomber operations aimed at countering missile threats to international shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian officials condemned the move, accusing Britain of facilitating U.S. military action in the region.

Responding to the threat, a UK government spokesperson said Britain’s armed forces remain ready at all times to protect the country and its interests. The spokesperson stressed that the UK’s layered air and missile defence system—comprising the Royal Navy, the British Army, the Royal Air Force, and close coordination with NATO allies—is designed to respond effectively to any potential attack.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has reaffirmed the UK’s defence cooperation with the United States, stating that allowing American aircraft to operate from British bases is consistent with international law and intended to help counter missile threats to maritime security rather than escalate the conflict. The government emphasized that its actions are defensive in nature and aimed at safeguarding British citizens, allies, and freedom of navigation in the Gulf region.

The exchange comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States, with concerns growing that continued military activity and retaliatory threats could further destabilize the Middle East and endanger international shipping routes vital to global energy supplies.
