US Senate Democrats Block $1.15 Trillion Defense Bill Over Objections to Iran War

WASHINGTON: U.S. Senate Democrats have blocked a proposed $1.15 trillion National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), arguing that advancing the massive defense spending package while the United States remains engaged in the conflict with Iran would amount to congressional endorsement of the war.

The procedural vote failed 50-46, falling short of the 60 votes required to advance the legislation. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said President Donald Trump had committed the United States to military action against Iran without congressional authorization, a clearly defined strategy, or an exit plan.

Democrats also objected to the administration’s request for an additional $350 billion in defense spending, arguing that Congress should not approve a record military budget while concerns remain over the legal and strategic basis of the Iran conflict.

Although the NDAA has historically enjoyed broad bipartisan support and is considered essential legislation for funding the U.S. military, this year’s bill has become a focal point of partisan disagreement amid escalating tensions with Iran. Republicans largely backed the measure, while Senate Majority Leader John Thune voted against the procedural motion to preserve the option of bringing the legislation back for reconsideration.

Despite the setback, the annual defense authorization process is expected to continue. Lawmakers from both the Senate and House of Representatives are likely to negotiate a compromise version of the bill before sending it to President Trump for final approval or veto.
