Western Europe Gripped by Intense ‘Heat Dome’ as Temperatures Approach 40°C

LONDON — Large parts of Western Europe remained under an intense “heat dome” on Wednesday as soaring temperatures neared 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit), prompting health warnings, travel disruptions and emergency measures across several countries. The prolonged heatwave has affected millions of people and placed increasing strain on infrastructure and public services.

Meteorologists say the extreme weather is being driven by a high-pressure system known as a heat dome, which traps hot air over a region and prevents cooler weather systems from moving in. The phenomenon has pushed temperatures to record or near-record levels across France, the United Kingdom, Spain and Italy.

France recorded its hottest day on record for a second consecutive day, with authorities placing approximately three-quarters of the country under the highest-level red heat alert. Power outages linked to heat-related equipment failures affected tens of thousands of residents in Brittany, while public landmarks, including major tourist attractions, shortened operating hours to protect visitors and staff.

In the United Kingdom, temperatures reached a record high for June, triggering a rare red heat warning. More than 1,000 schools were closed or operating under special measures, and rail services faced disruptions as tracks and infrastructure struggled to cope with the extreme conditions.

Italy and Spain also issued extensive heat alerts, with authorities urging residents to limit outdoor activities during peak daytime hours. Health officials across Europe warned of increased risks of dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke, particularly among elderly people, children and those with pre-existing medical conditions.

Climate experts have linked the severity of the heatwave to broader global warming trends, warning that heat domes and prolonged periods of extreme heat are becoming more frequent and intense. They stressed the need for adaptation measures as Europe continues to experience some of the fastest warming rates in the world.

Authorities across the continent have urged people to stay hydrated, avoid unnecessary outdoor exertion and check on vulnerable individuals as forecasts indicate that exceptionally hot conditions may persist in some regions for several more days.
