Zelenskyy Replaces Ukraine’s Army Chief Following Public Protests Over Military Leadership

KYIV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has dismissed Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi as commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and appointed Maj. Gen. Mykhailo Drapatyi as his successor, following widespread public protests demanding changes in the country’s military leadership.

The leadership reshuffle comes amid growing criticism of Syrskyi’s command, with demonstrators—including military personnel, veterans, and civilians—calling for reforms in the armed forces. Protesters accused the outgoing commander of relying on outdated Soviet-style military tactics and questioned his handling of key battles during the ongoing war with Russia.

In announcing the appointment, President Zelenskyy said Ukraine’s military leadership must adapt to evolving battlefield challenges by modernizing command structures, improving procurement, strengthening air defenses, and accelerating reforms aimed at enhancing combat effectiveness. He also thanked Syrskyi for his service, particularly his role in defending Kyiv and leading major military operations since Russia’s full-scale invasion.

Drapatyi, 43, is regarded as one of Ukraine’s rising military leaders and has earned a reputation for effective battlefield command since the conflict in eastern Ukraine began in 2014. He played prominent roles in defending the Kharkiv region and other frontline areas and is widely viewed as a reform-minded officer representing a new generation of military leadership.

The appointment follows broader changes within Ukraine’s government, including the recent replacement of senior defense officials, as Zelenskyy seeks to strengthen the country’s military command and maintain public confidence while the war with Russia continues.
