Oil terminal, logistics hub and data centre among targets in one of the largest attacks on the area since February 2022
St Petersburg, October 18, 2026: One person was killed and 15 others were injured in a large-scale Ukrainian drone attack targeting oil facilities, logistics sites and data centres in Russia’s St Petersburg and the surrounding Leningrad region overnight into Sunday, local authorities said.
St Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov said fires broke out at the St Petersburg oil terminal, an oil depot and several industrial warehouses. Fires were also reported at civilian infrastructure facilities in the city’s Nevsky, Krasnoselsky, Krasnogvardeisky and Moskovsky districts.
Russian e-commerce company Ozon confirmed that its logistics hub in St Petersburg had caught fire, while internet company VK said its data centre in the Leningrad region had been hit by drones, adding that its services remained available to users as normal. Ukrainian drone manufacturer Fire Point claimed on Sunday that the Ukrainian military had struck the VK data centre near St Petersburg.
Regional officials reported emergency power outages, with two transformer substations in Yanino switched off, leaving around 50 apartment blocks housing some 20,000 residents without electricity while repair work continued.
Russian media described the strike as one of the largest on the St Petersburg area since the start of the full-scale war in February 2022. The Russian Defence Ministry said its air defence units had downed 1,015 Ukrainian drones over various Russian regions overnight.
Responding to a question on Moscow’s possible reaction, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was quoted by the TASS news agency as saying that Russia continually responds to Ukrainian attacks with systematic, large-scale strikes. “The Kyiv regime is resisting. But this cannot change the course of events,” he said.
