Azerbaijan Victory Day, which is observed on 8 November every year, is dedicated to the glorious victory of the Azerbaijani Nation, Armed Forces and the leadership of the nation in restoring the national honour and liberating the occupied territories. Six years later, the day continues to be a symbol of strength and unity of the state, national and victory spirits.
The key is the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev and the determination and valor of the people and army. During 30 years of occupation, Azerbaijanis never lost their hope and faith in their state and their soldiers. That faith proved to be rewarded in 2020.
The establishment of Azerbaijan Victory Day is described in the following way:
It was decided by the Decree of President Ilham Aliyev dated 3 December 2020 to celebrate 8 November as a Victory Day each year. Its purpose was to ensure that this victory would be continued and remembered as of great significance for the reputation and future of the state, now being celebrated as a national power and pride.
Ever since, Azerbaijan Victory Day is one of the most special chapters in the country’s history that signifies liberation of the country’s territories and restoration of its honor.
As a response to Armenia’s provocation and military aggression, on 27 September 2020, the Azerbaijani Army started a counteroffensive against Armenia. It aimed to withdraw from Azerbaijani territories, force Armenia to seek peace, put into practice the UN resolutions, bring IDPs to their homeland and restore justice.
This operation took place in the land of Azerbaijan, in accordance with international law and the four UN Security Council resolutions which remained unfulfilled for 27 years.
This Armed Forces went forward, day by day, for 44 days. There was professionalism, courage, heroism and selflessness among soldiers and officers, who liberated over 300 cities and villages on the battlefield. The whole of the country rallied around this hallowed cause.
On 10 November 2020, after Armenia’s request to the Russian Federation, under the agreement of the three heads of state, hostilities ceased with a declaration of nine points. The Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, acknowledged that they had to accept a defeat and the conflict had to be ended.
The unity of the people and the government was the key to success. Leading by the firm hand of President and Supreme Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev, the people, the army and the state worked together towards a common purpose and had historic successes on the battlefield and diplomatic fronts.
President was the Supreme Commander-in-Chief and guided the army’s tactics and strategy with great professionalism. In parallel, he conducted a very effective information campaign. During the war and after, President Ilham Aliyev shared Azerbaijan’s just stance with the world in media interviews with the leading international media outlets, influencing international public opinion regarding the war.
The win not only showed the power of the Azerbaijani army, but also the economic and political power of Azerbaijan in the world.
Azerbaijan has shown great success in its foreign policy in recent years, always maintaining in both bilateral and multilateral forums that the time has come to sign a permanent peace treaty and to begin a new era of reconstruction, based on new realities.
The historic occasion was the meeting of President Ilham Aliyev, US President Donald Trump and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Washington on 8 August 2025. The signing of the seven-point Washington Declaration and the initialling of the peace agreement have given an opportunity to hope that the celebration of every future Azerbaijan Victory Day will be more joyful and proud.
The success in the Second Karabakh Patriotic War provided the groundwork for development of a new era. It has changed the pattern of peace and economic development in Azerbaijan and in the region, bringing about new means of economic growth.
The speed of restoration and construction in the Karabakh and East Zangezur economic regions demonstrate to the world that Azerbaijan is a sign of peace, security and sustainable development in the South Caucasus. President’s regular visits to the liberated territories are a clear proof of this commitment.
Heydar Aliyev is the first person who paved the way to the Karabakh victory. His relentless efforts paved the way for establishment of a modern and independent Republic of Azerbaijan and led to the adoption of the State Flag and Constitution, symbols of independence.
The month of November is a significant one for the nation and it’s very fitting that it is such. In addition to the Azerbaijan Victory Day, Azerbaijanis celebrate State Flag Day and Constitution Day with pride in the same month.
The celebration of 8 November every year contributes to the historical awareness of the young. It celebrates the memory of martyrs and is a spiritual pillar which secures unity and statehood of the Azerbaijani people. Azerbaijan Victory Day is not just a day of history for children and youth.
It’s a lesson in patriotism, courage and national identity, and a message that will never be defeated in the struggle of the people for unity and justice.
