Aisha Wahab Advances to Special General Election for Vacant California House Seat

CALIFORNIA: Democratic state lawmaker Aisha Wahab has advanced to the special general election in California for the U.S. House seat previously held by former Rep. Eric Swalwell, following his resignation from Congress earlier this year.

The special election, scheduled for August 18, will determine who will serve the remainder of Swalwell’s term through January. The seat represents California’s 14th Congressional District, which includes East Bay cities such as Fremont, Hayward, and Livermore, and is considered strongly Democratic-leaning.

Wahab, who campaigned primarily on addressing rising housing costs and expanding the social safety net, will compete in the runoff after emerging as one of the leading vote-getters in a crowded field of 11 candidates.

Her opponent in the runoff, fellow Democrat Melissa Hernandez, a Bay Area Rapid Transit board director and former mayor of Dublin, represents a more moderate wing of the party. Hernandez focused her campaign on job creation and support for small businesses, contrasting with Wahab’s more progressive platform.

Other candidates in the race included Democratic businessperson Rakhi Israni Singh, Republican real estate investor Wendy Huang, and small business owner Dena Maldonado.

The broader political contest comes as voters prepare for both the special election and a separate November general election for a full term in the same seat. Wahab and Hernandez also advanced from the June primary for that race, setting up a continued intra-party contest.

Swalwell held the district for seven terms before resigning in April amid allegations reported by the San Francisco Chronicle and CNN, which he has denied. He stated that stepping down was necessary to avoid being a distraction to his constituents.
