Christopher Harborne Donates £36 Million to Reform UK, Matching Record Contribution

LONDON: Cryptocurrency entrepreneur Christopher Harborne has donated £36 million to Reform UK, matching a record contribution made by fellow crypto billionaire Ben Delo and bringing the party’s combined funding from the two donors to £72 million within 48 hours.

The contributions represent the largest combined political donations ever made to a British political party and have intensified debate over the influence of wealthy individuals on UK politics and calls for tighter restrictions on political donations.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage welcomed Harborne’s contribution, describing himself as “honoured and humbled” by the financial backing. The party said the funds would help it expand its campaign operations, including plans to recruit around 400 campaign staff as it prepares for the next general election.

Harborne said Delo’s donation had prompted him to match the £36 million contribution. Both donors have indicated that their financial support is intended to strengthen Reform UK’s prospects and that they do not expect political favours in return.

The unprecedented donations come as Reform UK faces increased scrutiny over its finances. The Metropolitan Police is investigating allegations concerning the party’s funding, while a parliamentary standards investigation is examining a previously undisclosed £5 million gift Harborne made to Farage. Reform UK and Farage have denied wrongdoing.

The scale of the donations has renewed calls for reform of Britain’s political financing rules. Critics from opposition parties and campaign groups have argued that contributions of this magnitude could give wealthy individuals disproportionate influence over the political process and have called for limits on individual donations.

Reform UK, meanwhile, says the funding will enable it to significantly strengthen its national campaign infrastructure and prepare for the next general election, which is due by 2029.
