Greek Police Probe Motive in Death of Scottish Aid Worker Found in Suitcase

ATHENS: Greek authorities are intensifying their investigation into the death of a Scottish humanitarian worker whose body was discovered inside a suitcase in an abandoned building in central Athens, as detectives work to establish the motive behind the killing.

The victim, Elisabeth-Jane Ross, 38, had travelled to Greece in late June for volunteer work with refugee support organizations. She was reported missing after disappearing on July 15 and was found dead three days later when a homeless man discovered the suitcase in the Kypseli district of the Greek capital.

Police have arrested Sharif Ahmadzai, 26, an Afghan national and former boxer, who admitted disposing of Ross’s body and using her bank cards to withdraw approximately €10,000, but has denied responsibility for her death. Investigators, however, suspect foul play, citing CCTV footage showing him transporting the suitcase and forensic findings indicating Ross was likely asphyxiated, although the exact cause of death has yet to be conclusively determined due to the condition of the body.

Authorities are examining several possible motives, including robbery and the possibility of a confrontation linked to unwanted advances. Investigators also believe Ross’s mobile phone was used after her death to send messages to family and friends in an apparent attempt to delay the discovery of the crime.

The suspect’s American wife, Alaina Hall, who had previously worked alongside Ross in refugee assistance projects, has cooperated with investigators and reportedly alerted police after becoming suspicious of her husband’s behavior. Her assistance, along with surveillance footage and financial transaction records, has played a key role in the investigation.

Greek prosecutors are expected to formally charge the suspect as forensic experts continue their examination of the case. British authorities are also assisting the investigation while providing consular support to Ross’s family. The case has drawn widespread attention in both Greece and the United Kingdom, where Ross is being remembered for her years of humanitarian service and commitment to helping vulnerable communities.
