Mitch McConnell Reveals Fall Led to Hospitalization, Says He Is Recovering

WASHINGTON: Veteran U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell has disclosed that a fall in mid-June led to his hospitalization, ending weeks of speculation over his health after an extended absence from the Senate.

The 84-year-old Republican said he briefly lost consciousness after the fall and was later treated for a mild case of pneumonia while undergoing medical care. McConnell stated that extensive testing ruled out broken bones, a heart attack, stroke, or other serious medical conditions, and that he is currently recovering at a rehabilitation facility.

In a statement, McConnell said he had initially been reluctant to discuss his condition publicly, describing it as a reflection of his generation’s tendency to avoid sharing personal vulnerabilities. He thanked supporters for their well wishes and expressed confidence that he is steadily regaining strength.

McConnell’s absence, coupled with the recent death of Senator Lindsey Graham, has temporarily reduced the Republican majority in the U.S. Senate, potentially affecting the party’s ability to advance legislation and confirm presidential nominees. Despite ongoing health concerns, McConnell has reiterated his intention to complete his Senate term, which ends in January 2027, after previously announcing that he would not seek re-election.
