US Launches Fresh Airstrikes on Iran as Strait of Hormuz Tensions Escalate

DUBAI: The United States has launched a new wave of airstrikes against Iranian military targets following Tehran’s alleged attack on a commercial vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing confrontation between the two countries.

According to the U.S. military, the latest strikes targeted Iranian air defense systems, missile launch sites, and other military infrastructure. U.S. officials said the operation was intended to protect international shipping and counter threats to maritime security, while rejecting Iranian claims that it controls the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) condemned the strikes and asserted that the Strait of Hormuz falls under Iran’s authority. Tehran also launched retaliatory missile and drone attacks targeting U.S.-linked military facilities in several Gulf countries, further heightening regional tensions.

The renewed hostilities have raised concerns over global energy security, as the Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints for oil and natural gas exports. Fears of supply disruptions pushed international oil prices higher and increased volatility in global financial markets.

Despite the military escalation, diplomatic efforts involving regional mediators, including Pakistan, Qatar, and Egypt, are continuing in an attempt to prevent the conflict from expanding further. However, both Washington and Tehran have adopted increasingly hardline positions, leaving the prospects for a near-term breakthrough uncertain.
