Pope Leo XIV Urges Spain to Curb Political Polarization During First Visit in 15 Years

MADRID: Pope Leo XIV called on Spaniards on Saturday to refrain from “fanning the flames of polarization” as he arrived in Spain amid political tensions surrounding the Socialist-led government and renewed scrutiny of the Catholic Church.

The American pope, who has Spanish ancestry, has visited Spain many times in his earlier clerical career, but this marks the first papal visit to the country in 15 years. His trip signals a renewed focus on Europe’s traditional Christian heartlands after years in which recent popes have often emphasized outreach to smaller, more distant Catholic communities.

Leo’s visit comes at a time when Europe is grappling with deep divisions over migration, Russia’s war in Ukraine, and growing concerns about artificial intelligence. The pope has framed his journey as a mission centered on peace, unity, and human dignity.

He was received in Madrid by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, along with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, at the start of his weeklong visit. Speaking to reporters during his travel, Leo expressed optimism about reports of renewed spiritual interest among young people in Spain, a country that has become increasingly secular in recent decades despite its historically strong Catholic identity.

In his official address, the pope urged political leaders and citizens alike to move beyond divisive rhetoric and to prioritize education that fosters openness to diversity and complexity.

“Today, the temptation to gain popularity by fanning the flames of polarization seems to have grown rather than diminished, and human dignity continues to be violated,” he said.

He also highlighted Spain’s historical role as a cultural and religious crossroads, referencing its 800-year Moorish period, during which cities such as Toledo and Córdoba served as “centers of dialogue between languages, religions and knowledge.”

“For the love of truth, I invite everyone to set aside the divisive and polarizing narratives of your societal reality and history,” he said, adding that Europe should seek to overcome “sterile simplifications through the fruitful appreciation of complexity.”

The visit is expected to include further engagements focused on interfaith dialogue, youth outreach, and discussions on Europe’s evolving social and political landscape.
