Technical Issue Detected on One of the UK’s Largest Warships, Ministry of Defence Says

STAVANGER: A technical issue has been identified on one of the United Kingdom’s largest warships while it was docked in Norway, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed.

The vessel, believed to be the aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales, experienced a “minor technical issue” during a port visit in Stavanger as part of its ongoing deployment with NATO and the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) in the North Atlantic and Arctic regions.

Despite the malfunction, defence officials said the warship remains operational and is expected to resume its mission in the coming days. The MoD did not disclose the exact nature of the problem.

The carrier had recently been operating alongside allied naval forces in Nordic waters, supported by escort ships including a Type 45 destroyer and a Royal Fleet Auxiliary tanker. The deployment is part of wider efforts to enhance maritime security in the Atlantic and High North amid rising geopolitical tensions.

The incident is the latest in a series of mechanical issues affecting the UK’s two flagship aircraft carriers, which have previously faced technical setbacks during deployments. HMS Prince of Wales itself has encountered operational disruptions in recent years, including propeller shaft issues and flooding incidents shortly after entering service.

Defence analysts have previously raised concerns about maintenance pressures across the Royal Navy’s surface fleet, particularly for its large capital ships, though officials maintain that both carriers remain fully capable of fulfilling operational commitments.

The MoD emphasized that the current issue is considered minor and that no impact on mission readiness is expected.

The carrier is expected to depart Stavanger shortly once checks and any necessary repairs are completed.
