Prince William Says Homewards Initiative Has Helped Thousands Avoid Homelessness

LONDON: Britain’s Prince William has announced that his flagship homelessness initiative, Homewards, has helped thousands of people avoid housing crises as it marked its third anniversary, saying the programme demonstrates that homelessness can be prevented through coordinated community action.

Speaking at an event in London, the Prince of Wales said the five-year programme, launched in 2023, has made significant progress across its six pilot locations by bringing together local authorities, charities, businesses and housing providers to tackle the root causes of homelessness rather than simply managing its consequences.

William, who has long championed homelessness issues after being inspired by visits to shelters with his late mother, Princess Diana, said Homewards has shown that homelessness is a “systemic” problem that can be addressed through sustained partnerships, funding and early intervention. He expressed hope that the model could eventually be adopted more widely across the United Kingdom.

The initiative has partnered with major organisations, including Lloyds Banking Group and IKEA, to help secure housing, employment and practical support for people at risk of homelessness. One beneficiary, opera singer Chelsie Robinson, said the programme helped her rebuild her life by providing stable housing and employment following personal hardship.

The announcement comes amid increased scrutiny of royal finances. In May, Prince William revealed plans to use parts of his Duchy of Cornwall estate to support the construction of affordable housing and other community projects, reinforcing his commitment to addressing homelessness through long-term structural solutions.
