Rubio Reaffirms U.S. Readiness for Iran Talks While Warning Against Threats to Global Shipping

MANILA: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has reaffirmed Washington’s willingness to negotiate an end to the Iran crisis, while stressing that Tehran must demonstrate genuine commitment to diplomacy as tensions continue to escalate across the Middle East.

Speaking during meetings on the sidelines of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ gathering in Manila, Rubio said the United States remains open to a negotiated resolution despite ongoing military exchanges with Iran. However, he criticized Tehran for failing to engage seriously in previous diplomatic efforts.

Rubio also warned against any attempts by Iran to disrupt freedom of navigation through key maritime corridors, including the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea, saying such actions would threaten global trade and energy security while setting a dangerous international precedent.

His remarks come as regional tensions have intensified following threats by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement to target shipping linked to Saudi Arabia in the Red Sea. The security concerns have prompted some Saudi oil tankers to alter their routes, adding to fears of disruptions in global energy supplies.

According to Reuters, diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the conflict remain underway, with Iran reportedly reviewing a proposed 10-day ceasefire through international mediators. Despite these efforts, military operations have continued, with both sides exchanging strikes in recent days.

Rubio reiterated that the United States prefers a diplomatic solution but emphasized that any agreement must ensure regional stability, protect international shipping lanes, and address broader security concerns arising from the conflict.
