Three Firefighters Killed as Wind-Driven Wildfires Intensify Across Western United States

BEAVER, Utah: Three firefighters were killed and two others injured while battling fast-moving wildfires near the Colorado-Utah border as extreme heat, powerful winds and prolonged dry conditions continued to fuel dangerous blazes across the western United States.

The fatalities occurred after firefighters responding to the Knowles and Gore fires in western Colorado were overtaken by rapidly advancing flames during a burnover. Officials said the crews deployed emergency fire shelters, but three firefighters lost their lives while two others sustained burn injuries and were hospitalized.

Authorities said the Knowles and Gore fires later merged into the larger Snyder Fire, which has expanded rapidly amid critical fire weather conditions. Colorado Governor Jared Polis declared a state of emergency and activated the National Guard to support firefighting efforts and protect threatened communities.

Meanwhile, Utah’s Cottonwood Fire remains the largest active wildfire in the United States, scorching more than 146 square miles of land, destroying part of the Eagle Point ski resort and several cabins, and forcing evacuations in multiple communities. Utah Governor Spencer Cox has also declared a state of emergency and imposed restrictions on fireworks ahead of the Independence Day holiday to reduce the risk of additional human-caused fires.

The National Weather Service has issued Red Flag warnings across parts of Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado, warning that low humidity, gusty winds and exceptionally dry vegetation will continue to create conditions for rapid wildfire growth. Fire officials said aircraft operations have frequently been hampered by strong winds, complicating suppression efforts.

According to national fire officials, nearly three million acres have burned across the United States so far this year, exceeding the 10-year average for the same period. Emergency authorities continue to urge residents to follow evacuation orders, avoid activities that could spark fires, and remain alert as hazardous fire weather persists across much of the West.
