US Battles Escalating Wildfires as Utah’s Cottonwood Fire Becomes Nation’s Largest Blaze

BEAVER, Utah: Firefighters across the western United States are battling rapidly spreading wildfires as strong winds, scorching temperatures and exceptionally dry conditions continue to fuel dangerous blazes, with Utah’s Cottonwood Fire emerging as the largest active wildfire in the country.

The Cottonwood Fire has burned across vast stretches of forest and rugged terrain in southern Utah, destroying parts of the Eagle Point ski resort and several summer cabins while forcing evacuation orders for communities including Marysvale, Junction and Circleville. Gusty winds and low humidity have repeatedly hampered firefighting operations by grounding aircraft and accelerating the spread of flames.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox has declared a state of emergency and imposed restrictions on fireworks ahead of the Independence Day holiday, warning that limited firefighting resources and extreme weather conditions have significantly heightened the wildfire threat. Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and comply with evacuation orders where necessary.

Fire officials said a brief increase in humidity offered some relief to ground crews, but persistent winds continue to pose major challenges. Red Flag warnings remain in effect across several western states, including Utah, Arizona and New Mexico, where conditions are favourable for rapid wildfire growth.

The wildfire crisis has intensified across the region following the deaths of three firefighters in neighbouring Colorado while battling separate blazes near the Utah border, underscoring the severe risks facing emergency responders during one of the most active fire seasons in recent years.

According to fire officials, nearly three million acres have burned across the United States so far this year, with experts attributing the heightened wildfire activity to prolonged drought, unusually warm weather and persistent dry conditions that have left forests and grasslands highly vulnerable to ignition.
