UK Commits £190 Million to Long-Range Precision Strike Missile Programme

LONDON: The United Kingdom has announced a £190 million ($254 million) investment in the long-range Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) programme to strengthen the British Army’s deep-strike capabilities and enhance NATO’s collective deterrence.

The investment, unveiled during the NATO summit in Ankara, will enable the UK to procure the U.S.-developed Precision Strike Missile, which is capable of engaging targets at distances of up to 500 kilometres. The first missile deliveries are expected in 2027.

The Precision Strike Missile, developed by Lockheed Martin, is designed to replace the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) and significantly improve the British Army’s ability to conduct long-range precision strikes against high-value targets. British participation in the programme also includes the option to join future development phases of the missile system.

The announcement forms part of the UK’s broader defence modernisation strategy and follows the publication of its Defence Investment Plan, which outlines increased spending on advanced military capabilities. The government said the acquisition would reinforce NATO’s deterrence posture and improve interoperability with allied forces.

British officials said the investment complements wider European efforts to develop next-generation long-range strike systems, while maintaining the UK’s commitment to collaborative defence projects with European partners.

The move comes amid growing emphasis among NATO members on expanding long-range precision strike capabilities in response to evolving security challenges and the need to strengthen the Alliance’s collective defence posture.
