UK Crime Agency Uncovers Global Network Behind Drug-Facilitated Sexual Assaults

LONDON: Britain’s National Crime Agency (NCA) has uncovered a vast international network linked to drug-facilitated sexual assaults, identifying more than 270 suspects connected through online forums used to plan, encourage and share evidence of abuse, authorities announced.

The NCA said it has distributed more than 210 intelligence packages to law enforcement agencies in the United Kingdom and overseas, leading to at least 14 criminal investigations in Britain and the safeguarding of eight victims. The agency described the operation as evidence that drug-facilitated rape has evolved into an organized, transnational criminal threat enabled by online platforms.

Investigators said offenders frequently targeted women within trusted or long-term relationships, using sedatives to render victims unconscious before carrying out sexual assaults. In many cases, victims were unaware they had been abused until digital evidence was uncovered during criminal investigations.

The investigation was partly prompted by the high-profile case of French victim Gisèle Pelicot, whose former husband was convicted after repeatedly drugging her and allowing dozens of men to rape her while she was unconscious. Europol has also identified more than 150 victims and suspects through a parallel multinational investigation into similar crimes.

The NCA urged anyone who believes they may have been a victim of drug-facilitated sexual assault to come forward, stressing that a lack of clear memory or physical evidence should not prevent them from seeking help. Prosecutors said law enforcement agencies are adapting their investigative methods to tackle the growing threat posed by digitally connected offenders.
