MOJAVE, California: U.S.-based aviation startup JetZero is advancing the development of a full-scale blended-wing aircraft designed to challenge the dominance of Airbus and Boeing in the commercial aviation market, with the company targeting a first test flight by the end of 2027 and commercial production from 2030.
The California-based company is constructing a full-size demonstrator of its innovative Z4 aircraft at a facility in the Mojave Desert. Featuring a blended-wing design in which the fuselage and wings form a single lifting surface, the aircraft is expected to carry between 200 and 270 passengers while reducing fuel consumption by up to 50 percent through improved aerodynamic efficiency.
The project has already attracted support from major industry players, including United Airlines and Alaska Airlines, while the U.S. Air Force awarded JetZero a $235 million contract in 2023 to help fund the demonstrator. The aircraft is being built by Scaled Composites and will use Pratt & Whitney engines similar to those powering the Boeing 757.
JetZero’s design replaces the traditional tube-shaped fuselage with a wider, flatter cabin, allowing for more flexible passenger seating arrangements, larger windows, and redesigned onboard facilities. Engines mounted above the rear of the aircraft are also intended to reduce ground noise and improve fuel efficiency.
The company believes a successful test flight will pave the way for further investment and eventual certification of the aircraft, with plans to manufacture future commercial jets at its new production campus in Greensboro, North Carolina. The blended-wing platform could also be adapted for military transport and aerial refueling missions.
Despite growing investor confidence, aviation analysts caution that JetZero still faces significant technical, regulatory, and financial challenges before the aircraft can enter commercial service, including validating its promised efficiency gains and completing the lengthy certification process required for an entirely new aircraft design.
