UK Government Nationalises British Steel to Safeguard Domestic Steel Production

LONDON: The British government has formally taken British Steel into public ownership, completing the nationalisation of the country’s second-largest steelmaker in a move aimed at securing the future of domestic steel production, protecting thousands of jobs and preserving a strategically important industry.

The company, previously owned by China’s Jingye Group, operates the Scunthorpe steelworks in Lincolnshire, home to the United Kingdom’s last remaining blast furnaces capable of producing virgin steel. The government said the decision follows unsuccessful efforts to find a private-sector solution after concerns over the long-term viability of the business.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the nationalisation as a necessary step to protect a cornerstone of Britain’s industrial base, stressing that domestic steel production is vital for sectors including construction, rail, automotive manufacturing and national infrastructure.

Business Secretary Peter Kyle said British Steel is now owned by the British people and that the immediate priority is to stabilise operations, maintain production, improve workplace safety and develop a long-term strategy for a competitive, low-carbon steel industry. The government also plans to invest in modernising the sector as part of its industrial strategy.

The Scunthorpe plant directly employs around 2,700 workers, with thousands more jobs dependent on its wider supply chain. Officials said the takeover would help secure the UK’s ability to produce steel domestically and reduce reliance on imports for critical industries and infrastructure projects.

An independent valuation process will determine whether compensation is payable to Jingye Group, which has indicated it intends to seek compensation for the government’s takeover of the business.
