UK Pledges £100 Million to Strengthen Ukraine’s Air Defences Ahead of Winter

LONDON — The United Kingdom has pledged £100 million ($135 million) to strengthen Ukraine’s air-defence capabilities ahead of the winter, as Kyiv prepares for continued Russian missile and drone attacks.

The funding will support the purchase of urgently needed US-made equipment through a NATO initiative, including Patriot interceptor missiles and other air-defence systems. The package is intended to help Ukraine protect civilians, critical infrastructure and energy facilities during the coming winter months.

The British commitment comes as Ukrainian authorities warn of the potential for intensified Russian attacks on power and heating infrastructure during the winter. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has reportedly requested around 300 Patriot missiles to strengthen protection for critical utilities, although the UK contribution will cover only part of that requirement.

The wider package is expected to include air-defence interceptors, large-calibre artillery ammunition and drones. Britain said the assistance would be delivered through a NATO programme designed to accelerate military support for Ukraine.

The announcement follows renewed Russian air attacks on Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine. On Tuesday, Russian forces launched a major barrage of missiles and drones against the Ukrainian capital, killing civilians and damaging residential and other infrastructure, according to Ukrainian officials.

UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting is also co-chairing a virtual meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group, bringing together around 50 countries to discuss additional military assistance for Kyiv. The talks are expected to focus on strengthening Ukraine’s air defences and ensuring adequate supplies of military equipment as the conflict approaches another winter.

The British announcement comes amid renewed diplomatic efforts to end the war. US envoys have recently held discussions with Ukrainian and Russian officials, but no breakthrough has yet been achieved. Kyiv continues to seek stronger Western military support while diplomatic efforts remain focused on establishing conditions for meaningful peace negotiations.

The latest British pledge underscores London’s continued commitment to Ukraine’s defence and reflects broader Western efforts to ensure that Kyiv can protect its population and critical infrastructure against sustained Russian aerial attacks.
