Trump, Infantino Booed During FIFA World Cup Trophy Ceremony After Spain’s Victory

NEW YORK: U.S. President Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino were met with boos from sections of the crowd as they entered the field for the trophy presentation following Spain’s 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at MetLife Stadium.

The crowd’s reaction was audible as Trump and Infantino walked onto the pitch to begin the post-match ceremony. The jeers gradually subsided as the presentation of medals to players and coaching staff got underway before the World Cup trophy was handed to the newly crowned champions.

Trump, who attended the final after arriving at the stadium by helicopter, watched the match from a VIP suite alongside Infantino. Following the final whistle, he joined FIFA officials in presenting medals to both the Argentine runners-up and the Spanish winners before participating in the trophy presentation.

After handing the trophy to Spain captain Rodri, Trump remained on the podium briefly alongside the Spanish players before being guided aside moments before the team’s trophy-lift celebration, allowing the champions to celebrate uninterrupted.

Trump’s prominent role in the ceremony came after Infantino had earlier confirmed that the U.S. president would present the World Cup trophy. The event also followed controversy earlier in the tournament, when Trump personally contacted Infantino over the red card shown to U.S. striker Folarin Balogun during a group-stage match. FIFA later lifted the player’s suspension, a decision that drew significant public attention.

Spain secured their second FIFA World Cup title with a 1-0 extra-time victory over defending champions Argentina, with Ferran Torres scoring the decisive goal in the 106th minute to seal the championship.
