UNITED NATIONS: China has called for respect for the sovereignty and security of countries in the Middle East, including the Gulf states, while urging an end to threats against Cuba and the lifting of sanctions and the blockade against the Caribbean nation.
Addressing the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly on Saturday, Chinese Vice President Han Zheng said major countries should shoulder special responsibilities for safeguarding international peace and security and should lead by complying with international rules and upholding the rule of law.
Han did not directly name the United States but said China believes the sovereignty and security of Middle Eastern countries, including those in the Gulf, should be respected. His remarks came amid the continuing conflict involving Iran and the wider regional tensions.
The Chinese vice president also urged the relevant country to immediately stop using the threat of force against Cuba and called for the lifting of the blockade and sanctions imposed on the island.
The remarks followed a period of heightened diplomatic activity, including Chinese President Xi Jinping’s recent talks with US President Donald Trump in Washington. During those discussions, Trump warned China against supporting Iran, while US officials said Beijing had provided assurances that it would not do so.
Han also presented China as a supporter of developing countries and emphasized Beijing’s position that all countries, regardless of size, are equal members of the international community and that international affairs should be addressed through consultation.
The Chinese statement comes as diplomatic efforts continue over the Middle East conflict, with Iran seeking arrangements that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz and halt regional hostilities, while Washington continues to press Tehran over the conflict and its nuclear programme.
