Trump–Netanyahu Rift Deepens Over Escalating Israel–Iran–Lebanon Conflict

Washington: Recent Israeli strikes on Lebanon and Iran have exposed growing strategic and political differences between U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, despite their earlier close coordination in launching the conflict, according to reports.

The divergence became evident after Trump publicly warned Israel against striking Beirut during its ongoing operations against Iran-backed Hezbollah militants. However, Israel proceeded with the strike on Sunday, triggering a new round of escalation in the region.

Following the Beirut attack, Iran launched ballistic missiles at Israel for the first time since an April ceasefire, marking a sharp escalation in hostilities. Israel then carried out retaliatory strikes on Iranian targets, even as Washington continued sensitive negotiations with Tehran aimed at containing the conflict.

Although the immediate fighting has since eased, analysts say the underlying tensions between Washington and Jerusalem are likely to persist, reflecting fundamentally different priorities.

Trump, who faces domestic political pressure ahead of upcoming elections, is reportedly focused on de-escalating the conflict, reducing global economic disruption, and ensuring the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to stabilize energy prices. Iranian officials, meanwhile, have indicated that a comprehensive ceasefire in Lebanon remains a key condition for any broader diplomatic agreement.

Netanyahu, also under political pressure at home, is said to be prioritizing a decisive military outcome against Hezbollah and Iran-backed networks, while balancing relations with Israel’s key ally without appearing overly dependent on U.S. direction.

At the outset of the conflict in February, the United States and Israel acted in close coordination, with joint military action aimed at weakening Iran’s military capabilities and nuclear and missile programs. However, the war has since evolved into a more complex and prolonged confrontation, with differing end goals emerging between the two allies.

While Trump has signaled interest in a rapid diplomatic settlement, Netanyahu has appeared more inclined toward sustained military pressure, even at the risk of prolonging regional instability.
