Airbus A350F Freighter Makes Maiden Flight, Targets 2027 Entry into Service

TOULOUSE: Airbus has conducted the maiden flight of its new A350F freighter, marking a major milestone in the development of the aircraft as the European planemaker seeks to expand its presence in the global air-cargo market.

The windowless cargo version of Airbus’ A350 long-haul aircraft completed an inaugural flight lasting around four hours from Toulouse, France, on Tuesday. The flight marks the beginning of a certification campaign expected to last about nine months, with the A350F scheduled to enter commercial service in 2027.

The A350F is being developed to compete in the large freighter segment, where Boeing has long held a strong position with its 777 freighter family.

Airbus committed to developing the A350-based freighter in 2021, citing growing demand for air cargo driven by e-commerce, pharmaceuticals, electronics and other high-value goods. The programme has experienced delays, including issues related to the aircraft’s large cargo door.

The maiden flight begins the aircraft’s flight-test and certification programme ahead of its planned commercial introduction next year.

Air freight accounts for a significant share of global trade by value, while purpose-built freighters carry a substantial portion of cargo transported by air. Airbus is seeking to use the A350F to strengthen its position in this market and challenge Boeing’s established presence in the sector.
