Eight Family Members, Including Four Children, Killed in Montana Shooting and House Fire

BILLINGS: Eight members of a family, including four children, were killed during a shooting at a home near Billings, Montana, on Sunday evening before the residence was engulfed in flames, according to The Associated Press.

Family members identified the gunman as 44-year-old Alan Smith, who was among those killed after suffering a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Relatives said Smith had recently been asked by his parents to move out of their home, but returned during the family’s weekly Sunday dinner and opened fire.

The victims belonged to four generations of a blended family. They included Smith’s parents, an elderly great-grandmother and four children ranging in age from 7 to 15. Among the victims were Megan Ghekiere and her children, 13-year-old Owen Ireland and 7-year-old Chloe Ireland, as well as Ghekiere’s two stepchildren, 15-year-old Landon Ghekiere and 12-year-old Charlotte Ghekiere.

Police responded to the residence after receiving reports of gunfire shortly after 6 p.m. Officers arriving at the scene heard additional shots coming from the rear of the property, while the house soon became fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters were initially unable to approach the residence because of the continuing danger and worked for several hours to extinguish the blaze. 

The fire severely damaged the property, burning it to its foundation and complicating investigators’ efforts to recover evidence and establish the precise sequence of events. The residence was located outside Billings city limits in a subdivision that was not required to have fire hydrants, according to local officials.

Family representatives said 12-year-old Charlotte Ghekiere managed to call 911 during the attack and attempted to seek help for her family. Relatives described the family as close-knit and loving and said the tragedy had left the wider community deeply shocked.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and fire. The motive and other details of the incident remain under investigation.
