Explosions Rock Damascus During French President Macron’s Landmark Visit to Syria

DAMASCUS: Two explosions struck central Damascus on Tuesday, injuring at least 18 people, including four police officers, during French President Emmanuel Macron’s historic visit to Syria, authorities said. The blasts occurred near the Four Seasons Hotel, where Macron was staying, and close to the presidential palace, where he was meeting Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa.

According to Syrian officials, the explosions were caused by explosive devices planted in a garbage bin and a parked vehicle. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, while security forces cordoned off the affected areas and launched an investigation. No fatalities were immediately reported, and no group has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

The French presidency confirmed that President Macron was unharmed and continued his scheduled engagements in Damascus. Officials said the French leader was en route to his meeting with President al-Sharaa when the explosions occurred and was unaware of the blasts at the time.

Macron’s visit marks the first by a European Union head of state since the fall of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and reflects growing international engagement with Syria’s new leadership. Talks between Macron and President al-Sharaa focused on Syria’s reconstruction, political transition, regional stability, and expanding international cooperation after years of conflict.

The attacks came just days after a deadly bombing at a café in Damascus underscored the continuing security challenges facing Syria despite ongoing efforts by the new government to restore stability and attract international investment.
