Russian Missile and Drone Barrage on Kyiv Kills 11, Damages Residential Areas

KYIV: Russia launched a large-scale overnight missile and drone attack on Ukraine’s capital Kyiv on Thursday, killing at least 11 people and injuring 54 others, including two children, in one of the latest intensified assaults on the city, Ukrainian authorities said.

The attack, which lasted for several hours, struck multiple districts across Kyiv, causing extensive damage to residential buildings and civilian infrastructure. Fires broke out in several locations, while emergency crews continued rescue operations amid collapsed structures and debris. Authorities reported that more than 20 residential buildings sustained damage, with several people believed to have been trapped under the rubble.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko urged residents to remain in shelters as air raid alerts continued during the assault. The strikes affected districts on both sides of the Dnipro River, including Desnianskyi, Holosiivskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, Darnytskyi, Pecherskyi, Solomianskyi, Obolonskyi and Podilskyi, while nearby Bucha also reported damage.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the attack, describing it as another deliberate strike against civilians, and called on Ukraine’s international partners to accelerate the delivery of additional air defence systems to protect the country’s cities from continued missile and drone attacks.

The latest bombardment comes amid an escalation in cross-border hostilities, with Russia intensifying air strikes following a series of long-range Ukrainian drone attacks on military and energy-related targets inside Russian territory. Rescue and recovery efforts were continuing across Kyiv as authorities assessed the full extent of the destruction.
