Russian Warship Fires Warning Shots Near UK-Registered Yacht in English Channel, UK Investigates

LONDON: A Russian warship fired warning shots near a UK-registered civilian yacht in the English Channel earlier this week in an incident that has heightened maritime security concerns, according to a Sky News report.

The event involved the Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich and took place on Tuesday approximately 20 nautical miles south of the Isle of Wight, between the UK and French coasts.

According to defence sources, the yacht reportedly approached the warship at close range in foggy conditions and failed to respond adequately to repeated warnings. The Russian vessel subsequently issued audible signals before firing warning shots across the yacht’s course. No injuries or damage were reported.

The UK Ministry of Defence said the shots were “not aimed at the vessel” and were intended to prevent a possible collision, while confirming that Royal Navy ships, including HMS Mersey, were monitoring the situation and responding to ensure safety.

The yacht involved, a privately owned sailing vessel, was reportedly on a recreational voyage toward northern France when the incident occurred.

Russian authorities have maintained that the warship acted in accordance with international maritime regulations, claiming the civilian vessel was on a “dangerous course” and failed to respond to radio communications.

The incident comes amid already elevated tensions in the English Channel, where British forces have recently been tracking Russian naval activity and intercepting sanctioned vessels as part of broader maritime security operations.

The UK government has said it is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the encounter.
